Prometheus' True Intention:An Analysis of the Causes of Luxun's Literal Translation Proposition

鲁迅提倡“直译”之法,表面看来是对“近世名人”即林纾等人的反驳,但其实背后隐藏着深层原因,文章即从语言、文体、“译经意识”以及时代转型等四个方面分别论述。

As is known, Luxun was an advocate of literal translation, which may be taken as protest against tamous modern translators as Linshu. However, careful studies will discover more profound reasons for Luxun＇s perception of translation. This paper studies these reasons from different perspectives. By initiating Literal Translation, Luxun expected to make the Chinese grammar more precise; by ＇maintaining the original style ＇, Luxun expected to introduce foreign genres into China; apart from the above reasons, Luxun also hoped to achieve the success just like the translation of Buddhist Scriptures or the Holy Bible; last but not least, the age Luxun was in underwent a cuhural turn, and this, according to Evan-Zohar, would lead to a proposal of Literal Translation.
