A Survey to Shen Jianshi's Study of Philology

沈兼士是我国现代著名的语言文字学家,他在传统的语言文字学领域中建树颇多,尤其是为“语根字族”之学的建立奠定了科学的基础。沈先生在研究的过程中非常重视方法的自觉运用,这些方法既继承了传统的语言文字学研究成果,又吸收了国外的语言文字学理论,既立足于传统,又有所突破和创新。

Shen Jianshi, one of the greatest philologer of modem times on Chinese language, devotes himself to the Chinese language study. His outstanding academic achievement is that he builds up the theory of root of the words and the word families. His method of pursuing philology ＇ s studies absorbs the quintes- sence of the former scholars and redress the former theories and what is more he brings in the theory of language from foreign countries. It is regrettable that his method and achievement is ignored. The scholars after Shen Jianshi often quote his theories but there is no dissertation that gives a general introduction on his method. It is of great importance to analyze and summarize his method.
