To cope with the continuing growth of traffic flow, the Portuguese engineers, starting from the year 1996, have implemented thorough retrofitting and widening of the Tagus Bridge in Portugal that was first open to traffic in 1966. It took three years to complete the retrofitting of the bridge without interruption of traffic and the existing 4-lane roadway bridge was retrofitted into a new bridge of 6-lane roadways and railways, on which two main cables were added, the lower deck steel trusses were replaced, the railway tracks were installed, the roadway deck was widened, and the new bridge was again named as the April 25 Bridge. The retrofitting and widening measures taken for the April 25 Bridge provide brand new ideas for the maintenance and retrofitting of bridges of similar kind in the future.
