Objective: To study the effects of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on the cardiovascular function in dogs. Methods: Canine models of OSAS were established, and all dogs showed the symptoms similar to those observed in patients with OSAS. Before and after the experiment, the serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels of each dog was measured by ELISA respectively, and the cardiovascular function were measured by the echocardiography, such as left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF), fractional shortening of left ventricle(FS), stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR) and E/A. Results: The serum IL-6 levels increased significantly (P〈0. 01) and LVEF, FS, SV, HR and E/A all decreased compared with those three months ago (all P〈 0.05). Conclusion: The OSAS is a chronic inflammation and injuries on the endothelial function. It may affect the cardiac systolic and diastolic function because of the long chronic hypoxia.
