Kashi in the Eye of Westerners

新疆喀什自古以来就是中外政治、经济和文化交流的要塞,是丝绸之路上的一颗明珠。有关喀什的汉文和当地民族文字资料不胜枚举。自近代以来,西方的外交家、旅行家与商人都对喀什作过详细记述。他们以他者的目光,从不同的立场出发,所作记述完全可与汉文和当地民族文字记述相对照、补充和印证,从而进一步促进我们对于该地区的研究。

Kashi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has long known as an important fortress of politics, economy and cultural exchanges. It is a pearl in Silk Road. Documents on Kashi either in Chinese or in language of ethnic groups are too many to be counted. Since modern times, western diplomats, tourists and merchants gave specified account of Kashi. Their accounts were made from their own eye, their own attitude, their own perspective and were complementary to documents in Chinese and language of ethnic groups. Therefore, they can contribute to research of this area.
