Towards Metropolises,Their Culture and Their Literature

文章就“都市”热点有感而发,指出中国已有的城市史知识系统不够完备,难于获取从全景出发将经济、政治、文化、道德各方联系起来综合考察中国都市的眼光,且不重视自下而上观看都市的角度。对于都市文化的个性,注意挖掘传统的地域意识和乡土文化根系,对“现代调整”和都市如何面向现代政治、商业文化的“中国经验”缺乏研究。至于都市文学,需厘清概念,借鉴现代文学与城的五种模式,理解城与人的关联,将都市的市民性、精英性、民众和知识分子及其都市管理者一并思索在内,触摸文学的都市之魂。

This paper expresses personal reflections on some hot points of metropolises. The paper points out that because the knowledge system of urban histories available in China is not full and complete enough, it is difficult to acquire the vision of insight with which Chinese metropolises are investigated in a comprehensive manner from a panoramic angle by linking up Chinese economy, politics, culture and morals. Moreover, no importance is attached to the perspective of observing metropolises from the bottom - up viewpoint. As far as the individuality of metropolitan culture is concerned, there is a lack of studies of ＂Chinese experience＂ in terms of paying attention to the exploration of traditional consciousness of regions and of roots of local cultures, as well as in the aspect of how Chinese metropolises are oriented towards modern politics and business culture. As to metropolitan literature, it is essential to touch and feel the metropolitan soul of literature by straightening out literary terms and concepts, by drawing upon the five models of modern literature and cities, by clearly understanding the correlation between cities and humans, and by considering together the residents, elite, masses, intellectuals and managers of metropolises.
