摘要
《嘉莉妹妹》中描写了赫斯特伍德从成功的酒吧经理沦落为乞丐直至自杀的毁灭过程和嘉莉从一个乡下姑娘到百老汇名角,却仍然不幸福的故事。通过借用缪尔的小说结构理论和叔本华的生命意志理论分析身份的模糊性和对生命意志的否定对于悲剧人物产生的作用。
Theodore Dreiser relates in his masterpiece Sister Carrie a story of Hurstwood" s decline trom a manager of one of the top bars in Chicago go an id!er, finally commits suicide, and Carrie' s rise from a poor coutry girl to a Broadway star. Striving on to a better former self and resisting to the current circumstances, hurstwood hastens the destruction of himself. While Carrie leads an unhappy life due to her endless desire for better things. Thus an attempt is made in this paper to expose the influence of the fragility of achieved identity on tragedy in Muir approach and Schopenhauerian approach.
