Objective: To investigate the relations between serum bilirubin level and blood-fat, endothelin in the patients with essential hypertension, and explore their functions in essential hypertension. Methods: Eighty cases with essential hypertension and eighty-five healthy control subjects were divided into two subgroups according to their body mass index. The fasting blood samples were taken for measurements of biochemistry endothelin. Results:Compared with normal control, the hypertension group showed lower (P〈0.05) bilirubin, but higher concentrations of LDL and endothelin(P〈0.05). Pearson relation analysis showed that bilirubin levels were correlated with endothelin and LDL(P〈0.05) in two complicating groups. Conclusion:There is a significant correlation between the bilirubin and essential hypertension. The results suggest that bilirubin might play regulative roles through LDL-C and endothelin in the development of hypertension.
