This article discusses the functions of inference in the process of English/Chinese interpretation from the perspectives of cognitive pragmatics and translation theory of sense. It believes that inferential factor is indispensable in the four phases of interpretation process and it decides the conveyance of the speaker＇ s intention. In the process of interpretation, inference is an aid for disambiguating, achieving coherence and decucing intentions.
