Since opencast mines have large mining intensity, they destroy the environment more seriously, especially when the heavy metals have been transformed from the deep level to the surface. As a result, the heavy metals were redistributed on the surface and can cause serious pollution in parts of an area due to the change of geochemistry conditions for their migration. Thorough the investigation of the heavy metals contents and their occurrence condition in the overburden formation of No.5 Coal Seam at Shengli Opencast Mine, it was concluded that the content of the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) exceeded its normal content, so it is the main factor of soil pollution by heavy metals in this area
