In this article the author discusses the issue of borrowing from Western bibliographical standards for academic writing in Chinese. Through examples of citing ancient Chinese texts in research papers, and his own experience of academic writing for the Western scholarly community, the author demonstrates that bibliographical standards and styles commonly followed in the West do not completely suit the Chinese situation. While it is desirable to learn from Western standards, simply copying Western standards is inappropriate. The Chinese academic community must develop bibliographical standards that suit Chinese cultural and academic traditions yet match the standards commonly followed internationally. In addition, the author points out the necessity of textual research when citing or referring to ancient text. He criticizes the practice of quoting from secondary sources without acknowledgement, a form of plagiarism commonly committed in Chinese publications when citing ancient texts, and he calls for ethical behavior and self-discipline in academic research and writing.
