A View on Matriarchal Right in the Han Dynasty

“汉家旧典,尊崇母氏”。在汉代,母亲地位虽然次于父亲,但由于统治者大力宣传孝道,汉代的母权得以确立和彰扬,母亲在家庭中拥有一定的权力。汉代皇室的母亲还积极参与政治,汉代母后频频干政从另一方面反映了汉代的母权。但是汉代的母权仍从属于父权,母权并没有超越男尊女卑的社会框架。

It was an old practice in Hart Dynasty that mothers were respected. Although mothers＇ status were inferior to that of fathers, the matriarchal right in the Han Dynasty was established and well developed because of filial piety was greatly preached by the govemors. Mother was provided with some fights in a family, and mother in the royal family even took an active part in politics. Queen mother＇s engagement in politics in Han Dynasty was a refleetion of matriarchal right in that period. Nevertheless matriarchal right in Han Dynasty was still inferior to patemity right and controlled by social framework that women were inferior to men.
