The oppression of women in the patriarchal society has long been criticized by feminism, which is undeniably right. However, Edith Wharton's House of Mirth indicates that although men have been endowed with many opportunities to develop themselves, they circumscribe their own development while putting restrictions on their counterparts. In order to meet the social expectation of “masculinity” and “femininity”, both men and women have to sacrifice their own temperament, which prevents them from fully expressing themselves and restricts them in their self-development. The analysis of House of Mirth demonstrates that both men and women are burdened with the patriarchal system and the patriarchal society is a prison house for men as well as for women.
