This comparative study investigates expressions of the starting point of a movement in Chinese and Japanese. The Japanese locative case particles「から」and「を」can both be used to express the starting point of a movement. Nevertheless, the former emphasizes the physical location where the movement starts, while the latter focuses on the continuity of the movement. For this reason, the locative case particle「を」can be used to express an abstract movement. Similarly, both the Chinese preposition“从”and the Chinese locative objects can express the starting point of a movement. But the two expressions differ in the attributes of nouns used with them as well as in their basic meanings. Furthermore, this paper analyzes Chinese-Japanese correspondence in expressing the starting point of a movement and discusses several exceptional examples.
