Maodun was kept out of the mainstream literary criticism during the period of the Republic of China and his literary criticism embodied a salient critical spirit. With the progress of his self-reform and his shift of identity, Maodun went through a series of spiritual agony and gradually became the spokesman of the official literature and politics. With his role shift he produced some self-contradictory ideas, which mirrored Maodun' s dilemma between political pursuit and the laws in literature, as well as his intrapsychic conflicts.
