The father of Richard Strauss was the celebrated horn player in the Royal Orchestra in Munich, when Tristan and the Meistersinger were produced for the first time under Bulow. Bulow's Meiningen Orchestra had finished a tour of nineteen concerts at Munich (where Richard had conducted his Serenade for thirteen wind instruments), meeting everywhere with great success. Strauss pere went to the artists' room in the Odeon in Munich to thank Bulow for what he had done for his son. Bulow listened to his words, and replied:...Strauss, you were my bitterest enemy in the Munich Orchestra: did everything in your power to injure me when Tristan and the Meistersinger were produced in 1865 and '68. But,' pointing to youngt Richard, 'such is the revenge of Hans von Bulow.' The two Strausses, father and son, slunk out of the room, without another word.
