Textual Research of the Time of Zhang Jian's Writing of Five Articles

《辞海》“张謇”条中有这样一句:“张謇在‘五四’运动中反对革命”。这个结论主要依据《张謇全集》的收录的张謇1919年写的五篇文章。经考证,发现其中四篇文章不是写于1919年“五四”运动中,而是分别写于1920年、1924年,而且文章内容与“五四”运动无关。另一篇文章——《敬告全国学生》,是张謇在1919年6月28日,这个巴黎和约签字日,向全国学生扩大读者传递“中国政府已决定不签字”的重要信息。

In the Dictionary, the following sentence appears in the entry of ＂Zhang Jian＂： ＂In the May Fourth Movement, Zhang Jian was against the revolution＂. This conclusion was mainly based on Zhang Jian＇s five articles that were said to be written in 1919 which were collected in the Complete Works of Zhang Jian. Textual research shows that four of these articles were not written during the May Fourth Movement of 1919, but they were written respectively in 1920 and 1924, and the content of these articles were irrelevant to the May Fourth Movement. Another article, To Students in China, was written by Zhang Jian on June 28th, 1919, the signing date of Paris Peace Treaty, aiming to inform the students in China of the important information that ＂The Chinese government has decided not to sign＂.
