A comparison is made in this essay between the characteristics of The Glass Mountain and the origin, the form and the nature of poetry to show that the language in the text has poetic feature, and that The Glass Mountain could be brought into the genre of poetry. This paper reveals the metaphorical meaning of the images in the text from two perspectives: cultural metaphor and imagery metaphor. Therefore, the conclusion is drawn that Barthelme' s The Glass Mountain describes the process of how a poet composes poems, and the writer tends to show his wish of changing the function of language through poetic language with prose style, thus realizing his aim of making language break away from the symbolic level to the innate essential property of a thing.
