It probably originated in China and India. Its planting area is 140 thousand hm^2 in China every year. Chieh-qua (Benincasa hispida Cogn. var.Chieh-qua How.), a variety of wax gourd, is an important, indigenous vegetable cultivated in South China. Its planting area is 14 thousand ha in South China every year.
