Brett Ashley, a female protagonist in Hemingway' s novel The Sun Also Rises, has been regarded as a "Circe" or a "bitch" for ages. But in the late 1960s, many female scholars concluded, from the perspective of feminism, that Brett was a new woman, representing a new image in the western world. Yet this paper has some reservations about the contradictory views. It argues that Brett is portrayed rather as a dancer on the edge of knife through analyzing her lifestyle, thoughts, and feelings in the historical context.
