Originated in Latin, the word "culture" originally means people's improvement of the soil as they made the living conditions more suitable for them to live in. Later, this meaning changed. The hardworking people of the Baiyue race, who lived around the Taihu Lake created the world-famous Wu Culture, which has had a deep influence upon China's as well as the world's civilizations, with a typical example of its profound influence on rice-growing in prehistoric Japan and, in turn, on Japan's development.
