Capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) can separate proteins with pls different from each other by 0.02 pH unit. The basic principles. separation methods and characteristics of CIEF are described. Application problems including electroosmosis,detection techniques and the migration of focused zones are described also. The factors that affect the separation efficiency are discussed including the composition and concentration of ampholytes. the length of capillary and the focusing voltage. Examples of practical applications for the separation of protein mixtues are presented.
