Mono-phase glass-ceramics of merwinite ( Ca3 MgSi2O8 ) was prepared by sintering merwinite powder compacts derived from sol-gel technics. The bioactivity of merwinite ceramic was evaluated systematically in vitro. The surface physicochemical change of merwinite ceramic soaking in a simulated physiological fluid (Kokubo s SBF)for various periods are detected by XRD, SEM and EDS analysis. The results show that the carbonate-containing hydroxyapatite (CHA) layer is formed on the surface of merwinite ceramics after 7 days soaking in SBF solution. The worm-like crystallite CHA was formed on the merwinite after soaking in SBF solution for 14 days. Prior to the formation of the CHA layer, silica-rich layer appears on the surface of merwinite soaked in SBF solution. The formation of CHA layer on merwinite surface indicates a good bioactivity, The interaction of osteoblastic cells with the surface of the material shows a significant cell proliferation on the surface of merwinite compaed with β-tricalcium phosphate(β-TCP).
