五四白话新诗运动是以学习西方文学、反对古典传统的姿态出现的,其实,它也对于自身民族传统也有继承性的一面,胡适就认为五四新诗不仅继承了古代白话诗传统,而且也学习了宋诗表现现实生活这一创作精神。

The May 4th Vernacular Poetry Movement presents itself with a posture of learning Western classical literature while opposing elassieal tradition. In faet, it also has a eonvention of self-sueeession of the national tradition. Hu Shi believes that May 4th poetry not only inherits the aneient tradition of vernaeular poet, but also learns and manifests the ereative spirit of Song-dynasty poems whieh reflect the life reality.
