In gongbi, a traditional Chinese painting method featured by fine brushwork and detailed description, once the brush is set to paper, what is presented is indeed the life of the painter. Gongbi is an intricate combination of images and patterns which requires the painter to have a wellthought-out image in mind first, and to have the image within the patterns and rules of the brushwork. After being highly generalized, the image may be clearly presented on paper. The action of the brush like starting, continuing, turning and ending, the speed and rhythm of the movement of the brush, the length and thickness and taste of each stroke all is the reflection of the painter's understanding and feelings of the objective world. Therefore, it is argued that delicate coordination of his hands, eyes and mind as well as his spirit is essential to a successful brushwork painting.
