Jerome's Discussion of Translation——Analysis of Jerome's Letter to Pammachius

《致帕玛丘信》是哲罗姆为驳斥别人指责他在翻译艾皮法纽斯给耶路撒冷大主教约翰的信中有“错误和疏漏”,维护自己所采取的翻译方法而写给帕玛丘的一封信。信中哲罗姆阐述和论证了自己的翻译原则和观点,其翻译理论是历史的巨大突破,不仅在当时有着积极意义,而且还对西方后来的翻译理论与实践产生了积极影响。但是他的认识中也存在着矛盾性,其矛盾性与当时的社会背景是不可分割的。

The letter to Pammachius was written by Jerome to repudiate the accusation against him of the mistakes and omissions made in his translation of the letter written by Pope Epiphanius to John, Bishop of Jerusalem and to argue for his ways of translating. Jerome invoked many examples to expound and justify his ideas on translation. His translation theory was a theoretic breakthrough in translation study, having significant influence on both his contemporary and later development of translation practice and theories in the west. But there were also some contradictions in his ideas, which was closely related to the then social environment.
