The Mutual Selection Between the Translator and the Author

文本的选择是翻译活动的基础.文章试图分析霍克思翻译《红楼梦》的偶然性和必然性,从而提出文本的选择应该是译者与作者双向选择的结果.一旦作品具有可译性,它就会自觉的呼唤翻译,并在自己的全部读者中寻找合适的译者.作者对译者的选择具有偶然性.译者对作者的选择必须以其感知能力为前提.译者与作者之间相近的天赋是完美译文诞生的保证.

The textual selection is the foundation of translational activities. This paper is designed to analyze the contigency and inevitability of David Hawkes＇ translation of The Story of the Stone and then try to put forward that the textual selection is the outcome of the mutual selection between the translator and the author. A translatable text will consciously call for tanslation and purposely seek for a qualified translator among its readers. The author＇s selection of the translator is accidental. The translator should base the selection of the author on his own perception. The similar talent between the translator and the author is a guarantee of a prefect translation.
