Based on the analyses of the theme, characters and meanings of the symbols, which are underlied with conflicts and oppositions in the deep structure of Great Expectations, the paper points out that the binary oppositions enclosed in the deep structure of the text indicate that Dickens intends to reveal the ridiculousness of bourgeoisie society and to eulogize the qualities in the lower-strata working people, which is deeply rooted in his belief in humanitarianism, and is also the manifestation of the duality of ideality and reality in his personality,
