Patrick Gartmann studied structural engineering and architecture at the University of Applied Sciences HTW in Chur. Today he is partner in the structural engineering office Conzett Bronzini Gartmann in Chur. In building his own house, Gartmann was the structural engineer and the architect at the same time. He developed his own insulating concrete for this building. He substituted the sand of a normal insulating concrete （Leca concrete） with fine glass foam. The advantage of this new very tight building material （1050 kilograms per cubic meter） was the possibility of constructing a massive house with one single building material and no joints. Especially in the cold climate the construction allows penetrations of the building construction and ductile volumes.
