This paper analyses the success of the traditionai pure router solution to the Internet backbone networking, and the challanges it faces, puts forward the idea of introducing switch-ing techniques into the network. Constructing broadband Internet backbone with ATM allows for larger scale network, benefits the operators, and lays a solid foundation for the com-prehensive Internet service provision in the future.
