The Influence of Jesperson's Theory on Nominalization Study

Nominalization is the most powerful resource for creating grammatical metaphor. Jesperson is one of the earliest scholars who put the focus on the study of English nominalization. His theory is mainly based on rank, junction and nexus which constitute the core of the theory. The verbal nexus - words and predicative nexus- words are equivalent to what we call now verbal nominalization and adjective nominalization. This paper aims at introducing rank and nexus - substantive and its influence on the later linguistic theories, especially on the functionalism nominalization study.
