As one of the most controversial immigrant novelists in the English world, V.S. Naipaul enjoys a universal fame, while his narrative of a post - colonial Africa has been fiercely attacked by those critics from the Third- world countries. The overemphasis on the political analysis unnecessarily limites the critical interests and simply ignores the implications of gender studies. With the application of the related feminism theories, this essay intends to reread Naipaul' s novel A Bend in the River from the perspective of gender studies, explore into the complex relationship between historical memories and patriarchical writing and provide the work with a new interpretation of gender trouble, while criticizing the patriarchical ideology and gender politics embodied in Naipaul and his literary works.
