The disturbance of calcium is the direct cause for osteoporosis. Vitamin D endocrine system, including calciotropic hormones, Ca-transporting proteins, vitamin D metabolism enzymes, plays a major role in the regulation of the metabolism and the homeostasis of calcium. Adaptive and pathological changes of the vitamin D endocrine system should be focused on the occurrence and development of osteoporosis induced by different factors, such as ageing, sex hormone deficiency, nutritional deficiency, drugs, and immobilization. The study on the vitamin D endocrine system from the view of cell and molecule levels will be helpful in revealing the molecular mechanisms of osteoporosis, and will provide us a new way to prevent and treat osteoporosis.
