Reasons for Failure of Dagu Battle in the Second Opium War

第二次鸦片战争中,清政府与英法进行了一系列的战役,1860年的大沽战役是这次战争胜负的关键。影响这次战役成败的原因主要有两个,第一,清政府在政治上对西方列强采取避战求和的“羁縻”政策,影响了前线的军事部署;第二,大沽统帅僧格林沁在战术上犯了一系列致命的错误,如:弃守北塘,认为夷兵不善陆战等。这两方面的原因最终导致战争的失败。

In the Second Opium War （1856-1860）, the government of the Qing Dynasty carried out a series of battles against Britain and France, of which Dagu battle of 1860 was crucial. The battle failed for two reasons. On the one hand, the Qing government adopted the policy of avoiding wars with western powers and seeking truce, which affected the military deployment of the front. On the other hand, Seng-ko-lin-ch＇in, the commander of Dagu, made a series of fatal mistakes such as abandoning the defence of Beitang and misunderstanding that foreign troops were not good at land wars.
