手术、放疗和化疗是目前食管癌的三大治疗手段。以手术或放疗为基础的食管癌治疗有其局限性，而化疗在控制原发灶的同时可抗转移，可作为放疗的增敏剂，提高放疗疗效。近年来，随着许多化疗新药问世和广泛应用，尤其是紫杉类药物的出现，以及治疗策略的改变，化疗无论是在晚期，还是早中期食管癌治疗中的地位都越来越重要。
