Objective To explore the effect of severe dental attrition on facial height. Methods All subjects, with at least 27 teeth, were selected from the patients visiting the clinic of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) of West China Stomological Hospital from 1999 to 2001 with complaints of TMD problems. Among them, 64 cases with severe dental attrition and 40 cases without obvious dental attrition were included into test group and control group respectively. Middle facial height (MFH), vertical dimension in postural position (PPD) and vertical dimension in intercuspal position (IPD) of all subjects were measured with Willis ruler. Results There was significant difference in PPD between patients with severe dental attrition and the control( 19 〈 0.05). No significant difference for MFH was found between the two groups. There was significant difference between MFH and PPD in the test group ( 19 〈 0. 001), while there was no significant difference between MFH and PPD in control group ( P 〉 0.05). Conclusion Severe dental attrition can result in the decrease of facial height, but no increase of free way space.
