Citizenship is a core concept of modern politics, and the modern citizenship of some special western cities originated in the late middle ages.Through a reconstructive reading and interpretation of Weber's study on cities, this article points out that by comparative studies between the eastern cities and the western cities, between medieval cities and ancient cities, and via the hidden dimension of religion in his sociological study on city,Weber showed to us the structural, economical and cultural conditions under which the western medieval cities were capable of giving birth to the early shape of the form of modern citizenship.Weber's analytic framework with respect to the medieval cities and the origin of the modern citizenship is of enlightening significance to our understanding and reading of the recent theories related to citizenship, including the disputes between Communitarianism and liberalism.
