In his posthumous work, Humanism and Democratic Criticism, Edward W. Said endeavors to rethink American humanist critical practice since the Second World War. Through scrutinizing the limitations of both liberal humanism and poststructualist interventions, Edward.W.Said argues for a return to a historicist approach to literature: the philological hermeneutics championed by Eric Auerbach and Leo Spitzer. This short collection of speeches and essays exhibits the author's consistent belief throughout his intellectual career that literary studies should incorporate social commitments into humanist critical practice.
