欧文·威斯特的代表作《弗吉尼亚人》开创了美国西部牛仔小说的先河,它最大的成功之处是在美国文学史上第一次塑造了饱满丰富的牛仔形象。小说在讲述西部草原浪漫爱情的同时,也表达了对西部边疆生活的眷恋。牛仔西部小说由此迈出了美国西部文学发展史上的重要一步。
The Virginian, Wister＇s western classic, is the first complete treatment of the cowboy in American fiction and widely considered to be the prototypical American Western novel. The greatest contribution is that it created a vivid and full cowboy image never seen before. It is regarded as a model of love romance and shot through with nostalgia. The Virginian opens up a new field in American western literature.
