摘要
本文在功能语言学的理论框架中研究英语存在小句中there(文中称其为there_1)的意义和功能。文章首先回顾此前学者们对there_1的研究,包括有关语法功能、语义意义及语用意义等方面的探讨。由于这些研究所用的理论及视角不同,所以得出的结论大不相同,并且它们不能在同一研究中兼顾以上几个方面。功能语言学的理论框架可以将there_1在三种元功能结构中的意义统领起来全面关照,而不是局限于某一方面。考察发现,尽管there_1在存在小句中不表示经验意义,但它在该小句的人际意义和语篇意义中充当重要角色,表现不同的意义和功能。这种考察可以帮助我们全面理解和认识there_1的用法。
The present article aims at a functional treatment of the existential ＂there＂ （ i. e. , there1 ）. Previous studies are either concerned with the grammatical function, semantic meaning, or pragmatic meaning. But they often disagree with each other and none of them can integrate the different meaning and functions of ＂there1 ＂ into one single study. Systemic Functional Linguistics makes available a framework within which we could investigate the meaning and functions of ＂there1＂ by analyzing its role in the three metafunctions of the existential clause; hence it is helpful for us to have a comprehensive command of this usage of ＂there＂.
