To turn the wilderness into a garden was the dream of many American writers in modern times. When the "iron horse" ( the locomotive) as a symbol of science and technology suddenly entered the garden, they tried to illustrate the ideal fusion of art (machinery) with nature (the garden), which they thought might contribute to the creation of certain "middle landscape" between the garden and the wilderness, embodying the reconciliation of the opposing forces of art and nature. This ideal was actually shattered in social practice ; but the fusion of art with nature is still an issue that deserves further consideration.
