A disease characterized by emaciation and anaemia in sheep from surroun ding of the Baiyin mining area was described. The contents of thirteen minerals in the soils, for ages and in the blood, hair and tissues of animals were measured. The concentrations of lead and cadmium in forages were(111.2±98.4)and(12.0±1.2)μg/g,respectively.Compared with healthy sheep, the contents of lead and cadmium in blood, hair and tissues of affected sheep were significantly higher;the serum LDH and ALT activities and T 3 content were significantly higher;the serum protein concentrations were lower( P <0.01).The anemia occurred in the affected sheep belongs to a hypochromic and microcytic pattern.Pathological changes were characterized by the degeneration and necrosis inparenchymatous organs and the intranuclear inclusion in renal tubular epithelial cells. It is suggested that the disease of sheep in this region might be a lead cadmium poisoning, originated mainly from an environmental pollution.
