Aim: To evaluate the protective effects of mild hypothermia on neurofunction after cerebral ischemia. Methods: Forty six SD rats were divided into a control group, an ischemic group and a hypothermic group (anal temperature between 32-33℃) under acute and chronic conditions respectively by means of Pulsinelli and Brierley's animal model. Meanwhile changes of neurobehavior, pathological changes, activity of Na + K + ATPase and brain water content were observed. Results: Compared with the control and ischemic groups, mild hypothermia could significantly reduce brain water content, increase activity of Na + K + ATPase ( P <0.01) and ameliorate the behavior pattern. Conclusion: These data show that mild hypothermia can markedly reduce the pathological changes of postischemic brain structures and improve the recovery of neurofunction. These effects may be related to restoration of energy supply, prevention of brain blood barrier and amelioration of cerebral edema.
