In A Journey to the West, Ba Jie is characterized by his external features of greediness and stupidity, and his internal feature of trueness, and in this sense, he is a secularized comic image. People's love and mock of this image contribute to a contradictory aesthetics, which is closely related to the unity of a visible and invisible civil persona, the dual personality of civil citizens. Such a personality is the product of individual desires and social responsibilities, and it contributes to the comic effect of the image under discussion.
