This is the preface to the book An Introductory Reader to French Literature： From the Middle Ages to the 20^th Century. Basedon the current situation, the paper, on the one hand, reveals the significance of reading and learning foreign literary works for foreign studies majors, on the other, proposes the principles for writing and selecting teaching materials. It can thus positively influence the making of liberal arts textbooks for colleges and universities, and help improve students＇ reading interest and cultivate their quality and ability.
