As soon as Lin Shu made available a Chinese version of Joan Haste in the early 20th century, its titular heroine became a controversial figure in China. Adopting a gendered perspective, this paper shows the way Lin Shu misread and rewrote the novel and identifies the differences between Joan Haste's image in the original work and in Lin Shu's translation. It argues that the reconstruction of Joan Haste's image in the Chinese translation and its reception by the Chinese readers reflect both the Chinese people's expectation for and their anxiety over a change in the traditional gender hierarchy. The translation became a place where traditional and new ideas conflicted with and challenged each other.
