谭恩美在《喜福会》中选择中国母亲和女儿的故事作为创作题材,成功地塑造了中国母亲形象,在很大程度上是她作为华裔作家的中国情结和中国文化意识使然。在其小说中,母亲是中国文化传统的载体,是历史与记忆的中介,是连接过去与现在的桥梁。谭恩美打破了长期以来的“中心”和“边缘”对立的模式,对母亲们代表的中国文化与女儿们代表的美国文明给予了同样的关注,力求文化认同。
The relationships between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters are the main concerns of The Joy Luck Club. By artistically telling the stories of the Chinese mothers, Tan successfully creates the "mother image". In Tan's novels, mother is the carrier of Chinese culture and tradition,the medium of history and memory, and the bridge of past and present. And beneath the motivation of Tan as a Chinese American woman writer is her China complex and her Chinese cultural consciousness. Tan also breaks center-edge pattern and pays the same attention to the Chinese culture and American culture, trying to reach culture compromise.
