Beginning with the review of reference service in China and America, this paper interprets the connotation and significance of traditional reference service and puts forward that based on the thorough understanding of reference service, we must innovate in such aspects as ideology, methods and the equipment and facilities in order to carry down and develop the fine tradition of reference service.
