This essay analyses the intertextuality of Alias Grace by the Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood. It demonstrates that the novel uses a lot of historical texts and merges the genres of many kinds to build a multiple dialogic and dynamic structure. This novel criticizes the traditional narratives of history and deconstructs the authoritative texts of history. By referring to the psychoanalytic theory, the novel rebuilds the subject position for Grace and traces her real identity, challenging prevalent misunderstandings of and prejudices against women. Through a self-deconstructing narrative, the novel creates a floating style and illustrates the subjectivity of the nature of narrative. The essay concludes that the novel is a theoretical novel, which explores the post-modernist concept of the Real of history and reflects the relation between writing and the Real of history.
