The New Critical Theory of Short Story

英美“新批评”理论为二十世纪西方文学理论之滥觞,这一理论流派注重从形式入手对文学作品进行内部批评。一般认为其理论建树局限于诗歌领域,而忽略其小说理论方面的积极探索。研究布鲁克斯和沃伦这两位新批评代表人物的有关论述,梳理出新批评的短篇小说理论,这一补阙工作不仅可以使人们对“新批评”有更加全面的认识,同时对于外国文学研究的回归文学、切实掌握文本批评方法,将不无裨益。

A fountainhead of the 20th century Western literary theories, the Anglo - American ＂New Criticism＂ has exerted an immeasurable influence upon all the later schools of literary criticism. It stresses the organicity of the literary work and focuses on ＂intrinsic criticism＂ instead of ＂extrinsic criticism＂. Apart from its great con- tributions to the study of poetry, it has a fairly solid theory of short story, which is represented by C. Brooks and R. P. Warren~ achievements in this field, but which has remained unnoticed. This thesis aims, through a me- ticulous study of this theory of short story, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the New Criticism and draw more academic attention to the importance and relevance in today~ context of ＂intrinsic criticism＂ as advocated and exemplified by the new critics.
